About Semi-wild Australia
Several years of wildlife photography around Wagga Wagga, by local artist Josh Bett has resulted in a body of work titled Semi-Wild Australia, now on display in the E3 art space at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. This fascinating exhibition is a colourful celebration of life, its beauty, instinctive resilience, and its ability to adapt, reproduce and evolve.
Collectively Semi-Wild Australia displays a juxtaposition of native and introduced species of flora and fauna. It encapsulates the rapid transformation of habitats since the European settlement, and how wildlife has had no choice but to adapt.
Josh Bett is influenced by the African wildlife photography of Nick Brandt, and shares the same approach to capturing intimate wildlife portraits. Bett prefers to limit himself to the use of one telephoto zoom lens – instead of acquiring equipment that will bring his subjects closer, Bett prefers to work on techniques to get himself closer to his subject. This sometimes involves countless hours of repetition; re-visiting locations to gain the trust of the subject, capture the best light and the decisive moment. The amount of time it requires is why he chooses to photograph subjects as close to his home as possible.
Bett’s style is made unique in the wildlife photography genre, by the use of a full-frame camera, opting to include more of the environment surrounding his subject. In the complexity of the natural world he looks for negative space, in order to place emphasis on the subject, which is best seen in his silhouettes. For portraits direct eye contact is necessary to create a connection between the subject and himself, a connection that is passed on to the viewer.
Josh Bett hopes that Semi-Wild Australia will encourage more thoughtfully composed images in a digital era of bulk imagery. But more importantly to remind and demonstrate to his audience, the importance of wildlife conservation and regenerating the land with vegetation that is indigenous to the area. This creates nature corridors that evolve into semi-wild habitats, a habitat closer to what once was just wild.
